What is WIC?

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides federal grants to states for supplemental foods, healthcare referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk.

Who Can Get WIC?

Categorical Eligibility

You may be eligible if you are:

  • Pregnant (during pregnancy and up to 6 weeks after birth or after pregnancy ends)
  • Breastfeeding (up to infant's 1st birthday)
  • Non-breastfeeding postpartum (up to 6 months after the birth of an infant or after pregnancy ends)
  • Infants (up to 1st birthday)
  • Children (up to 5th birthday)

What Foods Does WIC Provide?

WIC provides specific healthy foods each month based on your family's needs:

Standard WIC Foods

  • Infant cereal, baby food fruits and vegetables (for infants)
  • Iron-fortified adult cereal
  • Vitamin C-rich fruit or vegetable juice
  • Eggs
  • Milk (whole, reduced fat, low fat, or fat free)
  • Cheese
  • Peanut butter
  • Dried beans or peas; or canned beans
